Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions about Odoo UK Payroll.
We currently support v17, 18 and 19.
Much of the Payroll infrastructure exists only in Odoo Enterprise. Whilst we are open to back porting UK Payroll to community, this would currently require a larger investment to re-create payroll in Community before we could add the UK package.
We provide default payroll rules including many UK specific examples including:
- UK PAYE
- Employers NI
- Employee NI
- Student Loan
- Postgraduate Loan
- Non-Taxable Deductions
- Taxable Benefit (e.g. Car, Mobile Phone)
- Salary Sacrifice
- UK Mileage Reclaim (£0.45/mile)
- Mobile Phone
- Commission / Bonus
- Car allowance
- Overtime
- Nights, Lates (Time and a Third), Saturdays (Time and a Half), Sundays (Double Time)
- Callout
- Travel Time
- Travel Allowance
- Loan Repayment
- Contractual Benefits e.g. Maternity Leave
- Statutory Payments (e.g. Maternity, Paternity, Neonatal, Sick, Adoption, Parental Bereavement, Shared Parental, Statutory Recovery
- Gross / Net
- Jury Service
- National Insurance disclosures for P60
Where the rule is in bold - we maintain (and override) the definition on updates. Where the rule is in normal text, we do not override the rule on updates. You may choose to change the rule via Odoo's UI, or you may choose to place your own customisations in a project so that you can track changes via git.
We maintain UK required data elements of the following models:
- Dashboard Warnings
- Pension Funds
- Rule Parameters
- Rule Categories
You are free to modify:
- Payslip formats
- Work Entry Types
- Salary Attachment Types
- Payslip Input Types
You can update data via the Odoo User Interface so long as it is not one of the elements we update to maintain the integrity of the UK payroll solution (as described above).
You may find it good practice, to make any salary rule updates in your own skeleton payroll module. In this way, you can force rules to reload (noupdate=0) and keep track of changes in your git commits/comments. A skeleton project example is provided here.
We currently provide updates to your repository by comparing our project in your repo with our core repository.
However, we are trialling git submodules where you link a branch to our master git repository and then pull updates according to your own maintenance schedule/version/need.
UK Payroll is provided free and has been donated to Odoo. It is currently being integrated with v19.
However, we do license the HMRC module which takes payroll data and submits FPS/EPS to HMRC. This is an evolving area and requires ongoing investment. As a result, we license this on a micro-payment basis which we believe is lower than alternatives like Xero, Sage, Qucikbooks, Brightpay.
We also provide implementation services and often find client value the services of an accountant as payroll spans both technology, tax and payroll disciplines. We also know - getting payroll wrong causes big issues - so we believe using a professional to implement payroll is important.
We provide support in addition to maintaining our core modules. Support is provided either ad-hoc, technical or as a HMRC PAYE Agent.
- Maintenance - update to core payroll rules & rates/parameters, public holidays, FPS/EPS.
- Technical Support - configuration, rule customisation, resolve technical issues, pension & payment customisation
- HMRC Agent Support - act as your Agent with HMRC - which provides us access to your PAYE Employers Portal - where we can resolve issues with FPS/EPS submissions or where HMRC may have errors with your account. This is a full end to end accountability - from payroll system to HMRC submission.
